Philippe Halsman
Philippe Halsman (2 May 1906 Liga, Russian Empire– 25 June 1979 New York City) was a Latvian-born American portrait photographer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippe_Halsman)
Best known for his surrealist style and sharp contrasts, Halsman captured some unique pieces that challenged his viewers to be comfortable with things out of place and the whimsical. For a while he collaborated with surrealist painter Salvador Dali who he bounced ideas off of. He challenged the traditional photographic styles of that time and showed a photographer can think like a painter, can have control over the subjects like a painter. He wasn’t interested in traditional portraits and landscapes, but the unusual and chaotic that forced his subjects to let their guard down to reveal their truth and chance.
